Two things have shaped Erich Ludwig’s career: his work for a large corporation and a family history that brought him in close contact with the lighting industry early on. “There are things you can’t study at a university, you have to have them in your blood,” he says. Erich Ludwig was born in Mering near Augsburg in 1956. His father and uncle founded a factory there in 1949: Gebrüder Ludwig GmbH, Fabrik für technische Beleuchtung (Ludwig Bros. Ltd., Manufactory for Technical Illumination). As a young boy, Erich Ludwig watched the company grow. After school, he initially completed business management training at Siemens in Munich before joining the family business in 1977. It was there that he took on responsibility for technical developments in production and oversaw extension work. He has been managing director since 2008. His technical background allowed him to drive automation at the factory. Erich Ludwig has also spearheaded numerous innovations and established a superb network in the lighting industry.
When Ludwig Leuchten brought Florian Möckel on board in 2014, they also brought in more than 15 years of management experience. A business graduate and Executive MBA, Möckel previously worked in a variety of positions, including at Bertelsmann, the mass media giant. For Bertelsmann, fostering innovation and pinpointing new fields of business were part and parcel of everything Möckel did, just as it is today at Ludwig Leuchten. “I get a buzz from thinking outside the box and exploring new avenues,” says the 49-year-old. Just how successful he is at this, even in difficult markets, is something Möckel proved singlehandedly when he became managing director of Kieser Print Services (Neusäss) in 2004. He transformed the company (now enve print services) from a classic print shop into a successful, modern provider of all sorts of printing services – an achievement that earned him the title of Printing Company Manager of the Year in 2010. Florian Möckel is now a shareholder and management board chairman at Ludwig Leuchten.
